The greatest amateur sports competition begins in a few short days, and as the athletes gear up for the Olympics, us regular folk, are busy planning for some cool Olympic parties! And there couldn’t be (in my opinion that is) a cooler, more inspiring city to host, than London.  There is so much culture and history in that wonderful city; the options are limitless for awesome parties.  Whether you are having an intimate get together with friends or a weekend brunch or maybe even a funky cocktail night, you can have so much fun with London as your theme.

For a nightime get-together with some friends why not use London as your food inspiration.  Many have long thought that British food is bland or boring, or worse, a bit scary (what exactly is in that pie?!).  But, that simply is not true.  You can have a lot of fun re-creating some tasty British treats.  Why not start with some bacon-wrapped scallops, or try an interesting twist on the British classic of a Chicken Curry or Shephard’s Pie.   And of, course, don’t forget the pudding. And for those of you who, like me, thought that a pudding is actually, well a pudding of the chocolate, vanilla or butterscotch variety, the British actually call their desserts, puddings.

A weekend brunch with friends or family just calls for a delicious spread, Afternoon-Tea Style.  Why wait until the typical British tea-time of late afternoon? Have an earlier party with interesting sandwich options, tasty scones and a buck’s fizz.  Set the table with mis-matched china and bunches of delicious English Roses. You can still be proper without all the fuss!

And if it’s libations you’re hoping for, the British can do booze, and do it well. There are lots of options, like a good Stout or Ale, but also interesting spirits like Gin or fortified wine like Port.  You can impress your guests with fancier drinks like a Kir Royale, Gin & Tonic, or Pimm’s.  Maybe get everyone involved in creating their own concoction with the elements you provide. Have fun!

However you are planning on celebrating or watching the Olympics, you can have such a fun time being a little bit British and reveling in all the interest that London provides.  Cheerio!
