I love that Spring is finally on it’s way.  I’ve been stuck in the blahs and greys for too long so I put together this little colour pick-me-up with an Easter themed table setting post. Even though the decor is Easter, it can easily be a Spring theme too. Hopefully you can take some inspiration from the images and advice below when you are creating your own table setting.

When you are thinking about preparing your table, think about different ways to add interest. For my table, I didn’t have tons of food, or huge place settings, so in order to make the table look more full without being cluttered, I opted for differing heights. I have large florals that overhang the table but I also have smaller arrangements more at eye level. I used a tiered stand for food and layered plates at each setting. I was able to create interest because there were different elements to attract the eye. But really, I don’t have much on the table.

I also stayed pretty consistent with my colours. I really wanted to use my teal table runners, in fact, the colour actually inspired my Spring theme so that was my main feature that I built upon. I then used plates that mimicked the same colour palette, and kept my serving platters fairly neutral. The subdued colours of the white and sage green florals worked well to provide consistency and balance without overpowering everything and I like to pop things with subtle hints of colour and the small sprig of purple did just that. The votive candle holders were also consistent with my teal colour palette.

I didn’t get all fancy with my cutlery, glasses or napkins (they were just paper – who needs to clean linens!), but the overall look is clean and elegant; just what I was going for. Entertaining doesn’t have to be cumbersome or have tons of steps. If there is consistency with your table, even a very simple one can be beautiful.

When it comes to food, I usually opt for what is easiest.  I really like to have things that I can prepare the night (or even a few days) beforehand.  If that isn’t possible, having food that is easy to prepare the day of the party means that I (and you!) can focus on the important stuff like getting yourself ready and relaxing with a cocktail.  I made the Asparagus Soup and Key-Lime Mini Pies the day before and had a super simple Vegetable Pie and Tea Sandwiches to make on the day-of (ooooh, and I will be posting the recipes for the Soup and Pie later this week….they were soooo yummy!).

And it’s okay to cheat a little.  The tall mousse cups I bought at my grocery store and the cookies were from a Fortnum & Mason tin I had leftover from Christmas (but remember to check the expiry on any cookies or crackers that you will be using. When those items have been in our cupboards for awhile, it’s easy to forget that they do have an expiration date). While it’s a nice touch to try and make all the food, it’s okay if you know that you just won’t have time to do everything and opt for something that has already been made. I can get some fantastic soups and salads from my local grocery store that would be just as good as if I had made it. Do what you can or want to do and then go get whatever else you need.

My biggest tip for you is to try and set your table a few days beforehand.  I know, I know….like you have the time for that. I get it. But, trust me, when you start setting the table a few days (I usually start three days beforehand but two days is okay too), you can take your time and rearrange things that don’t work for you.  Plus it gives you some wiggle room if you have forgotten something or want to change an item. When I put out my plates and began setting things up, I was able to visualize that I needed something a little more to spruce up the table – so, I added my votive candles! It takes a little extra planning but it is so worth it to start early.

You can achieve an elegant and beautiful table with just the things in your own home. You don’t need to stress with fancy food or expensive items.  With a little planning, consistency and fun, you’ll have an amazing table and a fantastic party that will totally wow your guests!

Let me know what you do to get ready for a party. What are your top tips?
