I have always liked the soft, subtlety of grey. It is a colour that hovers between pretty and calm, and definitive and strong.

I like the interplays of grey and how you can layer it with lighter hues like cream and dove through to silver and steel.

I am in the midst of pulling together some inspiration for a party I will be styling and grey has really been on my mind.  Contrary to the cold, isolated, dull feelings that grey weather conjures, grey as a style colour has an uplifting, Spring-type feeling for me.

I thought that I had the style direction already wrapped up. You see, I don’t know about you, but I am a great internal visualizer. I can see the pictures in my head of the mood I want. I can touch the textures. But, I have to bring this internal visualization to life somehow and that is through pictures and images that support the theme. So, with the thought that I would go with a grey, cream and soft yellow feeling, I set about finding some images online and in magazines that portrayed that vision.

This image that I came across from The Little Big Company was helping me get focussed on the details.

While more blue than grey, I liked the softness of the palette and the subtle touches of yellow; not too bold and glaring, but whispers of colour that added more dimension.

But, the thing is, as I delved down the Pinterest rabbit hole and search for more images in my favourite blogs and websites, I got myself more and more confused. Grey was working so well with just about every colour, that I was starting to lose sight of my original theme. But, maybe I should explore some other options.

What about grey and lavender?

I love how soft and pretty lavender and grey are together. Both hues can have varying degrees of intensity to create depth and dimension. Both images from Lilsugar on PopSugar.

Oo, Oo….maybe mint and grey.

There is something so pleasing about a mint and grey combination. These clutches from Allisa Jacobs on Etsy provide some great inspiration for this colour theme.

This is a remarkable cake! Mint and grey are so warm and inviting together and create a great canvas for pops of additional colour. Image sourced from Trendy Bride.

Or maybe a combination of any of these.

These four images from Style Me Pretty, show how laying soft grey with touches of yellow, pink and oh so pale mint can create a willowy and beautiful palette. Using florals and containers like vases and votives are a great way to add the colour theme you’re striving for.

Because the great thing about grey is it’s versatility, but that is also it’s downfall. It is difficult to narrow down the exact look when, just like the perfect little black dress, grey fits with anything and makes any design look amazing.

So, I’m going to ponder for awhile and let the various combinations marinade with me. What do you think? Do you have any favourite combinations?

In the end, whichever direction I go, I know that grey is the best companion.
