Okay, so at the end of January I wrote a post about how I was taking the plunge and totally re-doing my home office. And I’ve alluded to it over the past couple of months and finally, finally, I think I’m ready to let you see just what I’ve done.

I’ll admit, it has been a much longer process that I anticipated, but that really is because I realized that I wanted to do things right. Not just get a new desk and hang some art; I wanted a space that not only energized me creatively, but one that had function for all the things I wanted to do. It’s a challenging process trying to think about and figure out what you may need or use in the future.  I have, at times, been reactive, getting or doing things when I found that I needed it. This whole process helped me focus on being proactive and doing it right the first time around.

So, what got all this started? Well, as I mentioned in my earlier post, I was really inspired by this picture below from a design blog that I frequent for inspiration.

It is the office space of Holly from decor8blog, a really great blog that I like to go to when I just need something to get me going.  Well, this one day in January, I needed something to kick start me, and this picture did just that. I loved the organization, the light, the colour and the feeling that this room had.  How could you not be creative in a space like this. Taking a look around my own haphazard and rather uneventful office space and I was convinced; I needed to shake things up.

But, I’m getting ahead of myself.  I first must show you what my office looked like before. I am embarrassed to say that it is the one area of my home that I hadn’t put much attention towards.  I am very decor oriented, in fact I even toyed with the idea of studying to be an interior designer, but the office space became a place of function; desk, computer, shelves. I had always longed to create something unique and fun but I just didn’t know where to start. Okay, so here was what I was working with:

Okay, I know that to some, if not most, this doesn’t look that bad. And each piece on it’s own is fantastic. Beautiful wool rug, a solid wood desk with a large workspace, a nice baker’s rack that I used as shelving. But the truth is, it always seemed disheveled. Each piece worked on it’s own but wasn’t cohesive together. It served it’s purpose but didn’t energize or motivate me.  Even my dog looks a bit depressed.

What I realized was that the set up and size of the furniture was what was really wrong. The placement of the desk cut the room off and it’s size was really just too large for my needs. So, I cleared everything out and started from scratch.

Okay, everything’s cleared out, it’s been cleaned, now what?

While I was apprehensive and a bit nervous if what I had designed in my head would translate well into this rather small room, I was so super excited to begin this project and make my vision a reality.

So, are you ready? Here’s the finished product.

I wanted a space that was fun, colourful, functional and a little bit quirky.  What do you think? Did I achieve that?

I can’t tell you how much I adore working in this space. I have plenty of storage that will grow with me, a whiteboard and magnetic board to jot inspiration and ideas down on, and open space to move around and breathe. I feel I am so much more productive than I ever was in my old space.

Who knew a room could do so much!
